Product Description of Stannous Chloride Dihydrate CAS#10025-69-1
Stannous chloride (SnCl₂), also referred to as tin dichloride, is available in anhydrous and hydrated forms. The anhydrous grade appears as transparent crystals, with a melting point of 246 ℃, a boiling point of 652 ℃, and a relative density of 3.95. It is soluble in water yet prone to oxidation in air, forming insoluble chloride oxides. Its aqueous solution tends to undergo hydrolysis, generating basic stannous chloride [Sn(OH)Cl] precipitate. To suppress hydrolysis, dissolve the raw material in concentrated hydrochloric acid first before dilution; adding metallic tin particles can effectively prevent aerial oxidation.
Stannous chloride dihydrate (SnCl₂·2H₂O) is a colorless monoclinic or flaky crystalline solid, featuring a melting point of 37.7 ℃ and a relative density of 2.71. It loses crystal water when heated to 100 ℃. Widely applied in the chemical industry, it serves as a reducing agent, mordant, decolorizing agent and analytical reagent, and is also used for tin plating in electroplating processes.
Anhydrous stannous chloride is synthesized via the direct reaction of molten tin with chlorine gas, while the dihydrated product is prepared by reacting flake tin with hydrochloric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization.

Product Application of Stannous Chloride Dihydrate CAS#10025-69-1
Stannous chloride dihydrate is widely applied as a reducing agent in the production of dye intermediates and is also a component of ultra-high-pressure lubricating oils. It serves as a bleaching agent and is used in mirror manufacturing for mercury plating sensitization, where it helps form a bright silver film with strong mercury adhesion.
In the electroplating industry, it is used for tin plating and copper–tin plating of mechanical components, as well as for sensitizing ABS plastics prior to electroplating to improve coating adhesion and prevent peeling.
In addition, it is utilized in pharmaceutical synthesis, as a catalyst in organic reactions, and as an activator in the vulcanization of butyl rubber products. It functions as a mordant in dyeing processes and as a dye resist in discharge printing. The compound is also used as a stabilizer in the flavor and fragrance industry, and as a food-grade reducing agent and antioxidant, such as in canned asparagus and pineapple juice.
