Carmine, a naturally sourced red pigment for food, enjoys extensive application across an array of edible goods, including fruit juice beverages, compound wine drinks, carbonated sodas, confectionery, pastries, ice cream and yoghurt. Nevertheless, its addition is banned for dried meat, processed meat items and aquatic food products. Such regulatory limits are enacted to curb improper industrial conduct—specifically, stopping manufacturers from masking deteriorated or low-grade raw meat with color additives, which would otherwise mislead buyers regarding the freshness and safety of food items.
Per China’s Hygienic Standards for the Application of Food Additives (GB2760-1996) and supporting data resources including ChemicalBook, carmine shares identical permitted application ranges and maximum dosage thresholds with amaranth. The pigment can also be incorporated into candy outer coatings and soymilk beverages, capped at a maximum addition amount of 0.1 grams per kilogram. For red sausage casings, the legal upper usage limit stands at 0.025 g/kg, alongside a residual concentration ceiling of 0.01 g/kg. Such regulatory specifications enable standardized, safe deployment of carmine in diverse food categories while eliminating improper overuse of the colorant.
