Cetaxonium chloride, also referred to as hexadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, is a cationic quaternary ammonium surfactant and a component of benzalkonium chloride. Benzalkonium chloride is a mixture of benzyl alkyl dimethyl ammonium compounds, with alkyl chains mainly including n-C₁₂H₂₅ (dodecyl), n-C₁₄H₂₉ (tetradecyl) and n-C₁₆H₃₃ (hexadecyl). Featuring high lipophilicity and low water solubility, this substance can function as an anti-infective agent, surfactant and pharmaceutical excipient. As an ammonium salt preservative, it applies to research on oral, throat and eye infections, and is widely adopted in pharmaceutical raw materials for its anti-inflammatory efficacy.
