1,3-Dimethyl-2-imidazolinone is widely used as a solvent in various organic synthesis reactions. It is also employed in research on the photochemical formation of stable functionalized hydrogenated silane biradical transition-metal complexes from arylsilanes. As an inert dipolar solvent, it is commonly used as a safer alternative to the carcinogenic solvent HMPA.
